Hugo the Cat

A kitty is being honored for saving a man from his burning home.

In Bracknell, Berkshire engineer Andrew Williams was asleep when the fire broke out in his bungalow.

As the home was filling with smoke, the neighbour’s cat Hugo rushed through the cat-flap and clawed at the father of two’s face.  This raised the alarm that something was wrong.

If he wasn’t awoken by Hugo, the fire could have killed Mr. Williams the rescuers said.  The smoke detector had been moved while work was being done on the bungalow.

The cause of the fire was an electrical fault occuring at around 0200 BST on the 1st of August.

Mr. Williams

Mr. Williams removed the smoke detector while he was decorating his ceiling, placing it in a different location in the house.  It only sounded after he had already been woken by Hugo.

Mr. Williams started to put out the blaze himself, acting on “autopilot”.  He was later treated for breathing in smoke.

Hugo is a regular visitor to the William bungalo.

Mr. Williams said: “I was worken up with Hugo sitting on top of me clawing at my face.  He was trying to wake me up.”

“The fire chief said that I had better buy the cat a big piece of fish because he saved my life.”

“I’m just so thankful to that little fella.”
