I like your site! It's purrfect! A beastly dog charged at kitty and frightened him. My kitty was 30 feet up, my ladder is only 16 feet. I was going to climb the rest on tiny branches (sprouts really) but logic got the best of me. Yet, after several hours kitty got down on his own, I don't know how. The kitty was smart to dodge the predator but he was too young (5 months) to know that he does know how to climb back down. He just never climbed that far. He also never saw a beast dog trying to kill either, so he was acting out of pure flight. My cats routinely climb trees then back down, claw by claw, step by step. But he found himself very high up due to the sudden attacker after him, he climbed so far up, to the first substantial branch. I wished I had some cramp ons, or tree climbing gear. I guess that is a required item for cat fans. >..< Developer of cat pyramid houses.

Our tree guy says cats don't always come down. He's found cat carcuses in trees when he's climbing up to cut limbs.

Nikki, I like your article but I have to ask you, have you ever tried to stuff a scared kitty into a pillow case while clinging to a tree or ladder? it is NOT pretty so allow me to offer another solution (though it most likely will not work with pine trees unless they are big and have space between the branches). Get a length of rope double the height of the branch the cat is on. weigh the rope on one end and toss it over the branch the cat is on (not too close to the cat though, you don't want to hit or scare it more). Tie a cloths basket to one end so that it stays level when hoisting it. Place a old pillow into the basket and sprinkle with you cats favorite cat food or cat treats. (hunger is a powerful motivator). Tie off the other end and wait for your cat to enter the basket (you want to tie the other end off to avoid excessive shaking of the branch). Once kitty is safely in the basket, lower away. I just got my female tabby out of a 40 foot maple tree this way not more than 10 minutes ago.

Sam,

sorry to hear about your kitty stress! Sounds like you have really been trying to get her out with lots of great thoughts. Unfortunately, sometimes cats can be more stubborn than we like. Have faith that if your cat was able to get herself up there, she can get herself down, shes just not ready to come down yet. Perhaps there is a nest up there or she comes down when you arent watching to get food and water. Have patience and she will come down soon I am sure. Sorry I dont have more advice for you, sometimes cats outsmart us all!

Well lets put your article to the test. I have a cat who is up a fir tree, which has no limbs for about 25 ft. I triangliated the height my black ninja cat is at; about 54 ft.

She has been up there for 6 days. Cat food and Tuna don't work. I have a 16ft ladder, but its not enough to even reach the first branch.

The fire department won't come out, they only can get to about 25-30ft with thier ladder.

Tree climbers won't do it unless I cover their medical liability...love my cat to death, but unlimited liability for a climber is too much to risk.

The fire departement suggested 2 things. Spray the cat out of the tree with water, or cut the tree down. I can't reach it with water, and have not yet cut it down since its obviously a risk to the cat.

My last option is to get a scissor lift, which is about $300 a day.

Any options I am missing here?

The only trees our boys have access to is the Christmas tree (as we live in an urban area, they are 100% indoor cats!).

Still, one of my guys scales the tree, and lies in wait. He pretends he's invisible even when I can clearly see him. (Apparantly, he also doesn't understand that the ting-a-ling-a-ling of the jingle bell ornaments IS audible to humans).

He does not get a treat when he comes out of the tree! :D
