At abut 8 yrs old, my black cat got a white whisker. Only one. Now at 13 he has about 3 on one side and 1-2 on the other side. His coat is and has always been very soft and I'm told he is softer then most cats. He does have white hairs throughout his coat, but to look at him you would never know he was 13. I would love to see an article on the aging of cats. Maybe some signs to look for as he ages, etc. My kitty is an indoor cat, so I think it helps keeping him healthy. He hasn't been to the vet in a while, I'm nervous getting him vaccines a his age. He is very happy and healthy. I think about bringing another cat into the mix, but he is very attached to me and I feel he would get jealous if he sees me giving another cat attention. We cat sitted for a bit with 2 cats and he would attack them if I got to friendly with them.

As cats get older, it gets increasingly difficult to guess their age. It varies widely from breed to breed, and the condition of the cats life growing up (ate lots of food, little, was abused, was loved and happy, etc).

As for coercing him into a cage or basket, try to use treats and snacks to bait him : )

Interesting article, but doesn't help much with guessing the age of an older cat. Our cat Smudge was rescued from living rough. He has been with us for almost 10 years. When we took him to a vet, we were told he was between 3 and 5 years old. So he could be 13-15 now. He is tabby and white and I haven't noticed any grey hairs yet. His fur is still soft. Just lately have noticed him getting thinner and when I stroke him I can feel his bones. He wants to eat all the time. Food doesn't seem to satisfy him, as soon as he has eaten he wants more. It is very hard to take him to a vet as we are an elderly disabled couple and he won't go into a basket willingly. He is stronger than us ;-) Any ideas?
